Engaging Men in the Fight Against Violence: The Example of Quebec
In contrast to a coercive approach, a Quebec-based network supports perpetrators of violence to help them stop. The intervention methods include: initial intake, individual and group counseling aimed at fostering accountability and ending violent behavior, close monitoring in high-risk situations, and referrals to appropriate resources. The organization works specifically with men to help them learn healthy ways to express their emotions. Anger management techniques, such as temporarily removing oneself from a situation that triggers anger, are practiced to help them de-escalate and reflect on possible nonviolent solutions. [R.A.]
