Countering obesity in schools: taking action without causing harm.

Alerted by interventions by professionals that risked stigmatizing young people in school settings (weighing students, organizing weight-loss contests), the Montérégie Public Health Department (Quebec) has compiled a set of recommendations for their use, to "intervene without causing harm." Given the lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of school-based weight-loss programs, the authors urge the utmost caution, as this type of intervention may not only be ineffective but also stigmatizing.
