Alzheimer's: A program to support the families and friends of those affected.

This article describes the launch of a support program for caregivers of Alzheimer's patients called "Fil mauve" and its pilot implementation in February 2003 at four hospitals in the Paris region. This program is designed to give family caregivers the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to better cope with caring for their sick relative, prepare them to handle crisis situations, enable them to communicate more effectively, build their confidence in their abilities as caregivers, learn to seek help, and make better use of the resources offered by medical, social, and legal institutions. The evaluation of this program is based on the feedback from caregivers who participated in the sessions.
