Background

The 2023–2024 winter season was once again marked by the simultaneous circulation of influenza viruses and COVID-19. Vaccination campaigns against these viruses were conducted jointly, as recommended by the French National Authority for Health (HAS) in its advisory of February 23, 2023, regarding the fall 2023 vaccination strategy. The target groups for these two campaigns included, in particular, residents of nursing homes (Ehpad) and long-term care facilities (USLD), as well as healthcare and medical-social sector professionals. In accordance with the HAS advisory of June 22, 2023, it is recommended that these two vaccinations be offered concurrently.

The COVID-19 vaccination campaign began early on October 2, 2023, ahead of the seasonal flu campaign, which began on October 17, 2023, for all individuals targeted by the recommendations.

In accordance with the interministerial information note DGS/SP1/DGOS/RH3/DGCS/SD3/2023/113 of July 19, 2023, regarding the 2023–2024 seasonal flu vaccination campaign and the fall COVID-19 vaccination campaign, a survey is being conducted by Santé publique France to estimate vaccination coverage against influenza and COVID-19 among residents and staff of ESMS facilities.

Target Population

This study covers all ESMS facilities that provide residential care for older adults, people with disabilities, or individuals facing specific challenges, regardless of the facility’s legal status, including ESMS facilities affiliated with a healthcare facility. However, facilities that do not provide residential care are not included in the scope of this survey.

Participation in the survey

The institutions concerned are invited to complete an online questionnaire between March 4 and 24, 2024.

Data Collected

The information collected is kept to a minimum. It includes:

  • the total number of residents and salaried staff at the facility;

  • the number of residents and staff who have been vaccinated against the flu since October 2023;

  • the number of residents who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 since October 2, 2023;

  • the number of residents who have not been vaccinated due to a SARS-CoV-2 infection in the past 3 months;

  • and, if possible, the number of staff members who have been vaccinated against the flu by category (e.g., nurses, nursing assistants, etc.)

The data to be entered into the online tool are listed in the survey questionnaire:
