Alcohol consumption during pregnancy and its effects on the newborn

In 2011, according to the Elfe study, 27.6% of women reported drinking alcohol before they knew they were pregnant, and 21.2% reported drinking after learning of their pregnancy. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy was more common among older women and those with higher levels of education. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of low birth weight for gestational age but not with preterm birth.
