Surveillance of bronchiolitis in Réunion. Epidemiological update as of January 9, 2015.

Epidemiological Situation

Since early December, there has been an increase in emergency department visits for bronchiolitis. The epidemic peak appears to have been reached in the last week of 2014, as a decrease in visits for bronchiolitis was observed in the first week of January 2015. This trend is typical for this time of year and marks the continuation of the seasonal bronchiolitis epidemic in Réunion. Virological data show that RSV has been circulating on the island since October. However, the number of emergency room visits over the past three weeks is significantly higher than in previous years, indicating a particularly severe outbreak this year. Ultimately, the trend in these indicators underscores the importance of reminding the public of appropriate preventive measures as the southern summer begins.
