Key Points

Among adults aged 18 to 75, in 2017, the standardized prevalence of daily smoking was 28.6%, with a higher prevalence among men (34.1%) than among women (23.3%). This regional prevalence was not different from that of other metropolitan areas. The number of daily smokers in the region is estimated at 500,000.

Among 17-year-olds in 2017, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté was among the regions with high prevalence rates for daily smoking and heavy smoking (27.6% and 6.4%, respectively).

Among daily smokers, 74.6% smoked heavily (more than 10 cigarettes per day) (74.4% of men and 74.8% of women), a proportion significantly higher than that of metropolitan France, which was 66.8%.

Among daily smokers, 52.8% reported wanting to quit smoking, including 20.0% who planned to quit within 6 months. Those aged 18–30 were the most likely to have attempted to quit smoking (44.5%).

Among women, during the 2007–2016 period, the age-standardized incidence rate of lung cancer was significantly lower than the national average (17.1 versus 17.9 per 100,000 person-years). Among men, the age-standardized lung cancer mortality rate was significantly higher than the national average (39.5 versus 38.2 per 100,000 person-years).
