Public Health Monitoring in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. Bulletin dated October 14, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

  • 15 locally acquired cases of chikungunya in the town of Cavalaire in the Var department.
  • Nearly 40% of West Nile virus cases in mainland France were contracted in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

West Nile virus infections

  • Active circulation of the virus in the Bouches-du-Rhône, Vaucluse, and Var departments
  • A total of 66 human cases have been identified in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region (+6 cases compared to the last report), nearly half of whom were hospitalized. Thirty-one cases were diagnosed in Bouches-du-Rhône, 18 in Vaucluse, and 17 in Var.
  • A very large number of equine cases have been diagnosed in these departments.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • In Week 41, activity for acute respiratory infections (ARI) is at baseline levels in both community settings and hospitals. The SOS Médecins and OSCOUR® indicators for ARI are generally stable, at levels similar to those of the same period last year.
  • Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: baseline level, low activity. Among the influenza viruses detected since Week 40, the majority were type A (subtyping not available in the region).
  • Bronchiolitis (children under 1 year old): baseline level, very low activity (SOS Médecins) and consistent with previous years (emergency departments). RSV is circulating at low levels, unlike rhinoviruses and enteroviruses, which are also responsible for bronchiolitis.
  • COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 is still circulating at a higher level than during the same period last year, but the number of emergency department visits for COVID-19 is, however, significantly lower (declining among SOS Médecins affiliates and stable in emergency departments in Week 41).
  • The flu vaccination campaign began this week, with the option to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at the same time.

Mortality

  • The number of deaths from all causes, based on INSEE civil registry data, remained within the usual range of fluctuation at the regional level in S40.
  • Data on electronic certification of all-cause deaths in S41 also remained within the usual range (graphs not shown).
