Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of June 18, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks, consistent with levels typically observed during the inter-epidemic period.

Chikungunya

  • Since the detection of the first confirmed case of chikungunya in late January, 799 cases have been laboratory-confirmed in French Guiana. The virus is spreading and becoming more widespread across the territory: the West Coast and Savanes sectors are in an epidemic phase (since S16 and S23, respectively), Cayenne Island is in the phase of epidemic outbreaks (since S18), the Maroni sector is in the sporadic transmission phase (since S11), and the Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors remain under epidemiological surveillance.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was low and stable over the past two weeks, with 6 cases recorded (4 in Week 23 and 2 in Week 24, unconsolidated data) compared to a total of 4 in Weeks 21 and 22. Of these 6 cases, 1 locally acquired case was caused by P. falciparum and 5 by P. vivax (including 1 relapse). Since the beginning of the year, 125 cases of malaria have been reported, including 15 in April, 20 in May, and 6 in June. Over the past three months, most infections have occurred in gold-mining areas in the Savanes sector.

Bronchiolitis

  • Bronchiolitis activity remained stable and high across the region; RSV was identified in biological samples, and severe cases of bronchiolitis continued to be reported. The epidemic is ongoing.

Flu-like illness

  • Despite a slight increase in emergency department visits for influenza-like illness, influenza activity remained low in the region.

COVID-19

  • SARS-CoV-2 activity was low.

Diarrhea

  • Although on the decline, diarrhea-related activity remained high in the emergency departments at the three CHU sites and at a moderate level in the CDPSs.
