Healthcare Professionals and Smoking: Results of the "Health Barometer" Survey of Physicians and Pharmacists, France, 2003.
The National Cancer Action Plan, established in 2003 for a five-year period, identifies tobacco control as one of the top priorities in prevention. Healthcare professionals, whether general practitioners or community pharmacists, will see their role in this area strengthened, as several provisions directly concern them. The plan calls for the introduction of a minimum standard of tobacco counseling during preventive health consultations, as well as the development of training through the creation of a “prevention and health education” module—including a specific section on tobacco—within the first-year core curriculum of medical studies. The objective of this article is to describe, at the outset of the cancer plan, the opinions and practices of general practitioners and community pharmacists regarding tobacco control.
