SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 25, 2011
SOS Médecins Ajaccio joined the surveillance system on December 14, 2010, and submits its data daily. This data will be included in the bulletin after three months of reporting to ensure a sufficient historical record. The total volume of activity across all SOS Médecins associations has stabilized compared to last week for all age groups.
Across all age groups, the reasons for calls regarding flu-like symptoms and clinical flu diagnoses have stabilized since late December, though with variations by age group and geographic area.Over the past week, clinical influenza diagnoses have increased among children, though at a more moderate rate than in previous weeks: +11% for children under 5 and +4% for those aged 5–14 compared to the second week of January. They have decreased slightly among adults: -4% among those aged 15–74 and increased among those over 75: +7%.
The number of clinical influenza diagnoses continues to rise in the Southwest, Central-East, and Northeast; it has stabilized in the West and Central/Ile-de-France; and is decreasing in the North.
After a sharp decline at the end of 2010 and stabilization at the start of the year, calls for "bronchiolitis and respiratory conditions in infants" among children under 2 years of age have once again risen sharply in recent days (+43% between weeks 2 and 3) across all geographic regions, which is consistent with data observed in emergency departments (Oscour®). They account for nearly half of SOS Médecins’ activity for this age group.
The "gastroenteritis" indicator has been declining since early January: -17% compared to the second week of January. This decrease applies to all age groups and is observed across all geographic regions. The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins associations has decreased over the past week.
