SOS Médecins National Newsletter, February 1, 2011

The total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics increased slightly compared to last week across all age groups (+8% among children, 3% among those aged 15–74, and 5% among older adults).Across all age groups, calls for flu-like symptoms and clinical flu diagnoses increased over the past week, after having stabilized since late December. However, variations are observed by age group and geographic region. The number of clinical influenza diagnoses continues to rise in the Southwest, Central-East, and Northeast, while it has stabilized in the West and the Center/Ile-de-France region and is decreasing in the North.

Over the past week, across all of France, clinical influenza diagnoses have increased among children: +8% for those under 5 and +16% for those aged 5–14 compared to the third week of January. They have also increased among adults: +18% among those aged 15–74 and +13% among those over 75.

After a sharp decline at the end of 2010, a stabilization at the start of the year, and then a resurgence in week 3, calls for "bronchiolitis and respiratory conditions in infants" among children under 2 years of age have stabilized over the last few days (+7.6% between weeks 3 and 4) across all geographic regions, which is consistent with data observed in emergency departments (Oscour®). They account for nearly half of SOS Médecins’ activity for this age group.

The "gastroenteritis" indicator has stabilized over the past few days, though there has been an increase among children and older individuals.

The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has decreased over the past week.
