Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, February 5, 2019.

Summary

Nationally, all-cause mortality across all age groups has risen gradually since the beginning of the year and is higher than in the first four weeks of 2019 (December 31 to January 27) (Figures 1–2). This excess mortality applies to people aged 15–64 (between December 24 and January 13) and those aged 85 and older (from December 31 to January 24).Across all age groups, excess mortality for the first three weeks of 2019 (weeks for which all-cause mortality data are pre-consolidated) is estimated at 8%, or nearly 3,000 deaths (an estimate extrapolated to the whole of France based on data from a sample of 3,000 municipalities). These observations should be interpreted with caution, as the data are still unconsolidated due to the usual transmission delays. According to data from electronic certification, 2,390 deaths were recorded in week 05 (January 28 to February 3, 2019).
