Suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts among 15- to 30-year-olds
Chapter from the book: Beck, F., & Richard, J. (2013). Health behaviors among young people: Analyses of the 2010 Health Barometer. Saint-Denis: INPES Press; 344 p. Every year, suicide claims the lives of approximately one million people worldwide, a figure that has been steadily rising for several decades. According to Eurostat data, France ranks among the Western European countries with high suicide mortality rates, following Finland, the three Baltic countries, Hungary, Belgium, and Slovenia. In France, the number of suicides and suicide attempts remains particularly concerning, with approximately 10,500 deaths and more than 200,000 people attempting suicide each year; these attempts result in approximately 90,000 hospitalizations in short-stay medical, surgical, and obstetric (MSO) facilities. Furthermore, the number of deaths by suicide is estimated to be underestimated by approximately 10 to 20% due to underreporting, the existence of “hidden” suicides, or cases where the intentionality of the act is not clearly established; these deaths are reported as poisonings or accidents or recorded as deaths of undetermined cause. In France, the number of suicide deaths in the general population, after a significant increase, declined between the early 1990s and the 2000s, before stabilizing over the past decade. This trend is also observed among young adults. Beyond the recent media coverage of child suicide, youth suicide remains a major public health concern. Indeed, although suicide rates are highest among the elderly, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 30-year-olds according to data from Inserm’s CépiDc, and suicide attempts are one of the main causes of hospitalization for young women around age 30, excluding maternity care.[chapter excerpt]
