Public Health Bulletin: Winter Outbreaks 2019–2020 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Corsica.

Key Points

Influenza

  • A moderate influenza outbreak that lasted 10 weeks in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and 6 weeks in Corsica;

  • Patients were younger than in previous outbreaks in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region;

  • simultaneous circulation of influenza A and B viruses throughout the season;

  • a limited number of hospitalizations in intensive care units in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica;

  • limited excess overall mortality in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, with an estimated excess of 3% for all-age mortality and 4% for those aged 85 and older over the entire flu epidemic period. The significant excess observed only at the end of the period (+11.8% in week 11) could be linked to the impact of the increasing circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in France in early March 2020.

Bronchiolitis

An epidemic of comparable intensity and duration to previous years in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
