Heat Waves and Health in the Pays de la Loire Region. Public Health Bulletin: Summer 2023 Report.
Key Points
The Pays de la Loire region experienced two heat waves: the first occurred during the second half of August and the second during the first half of September 2023. Biometeorological alert thresholds were exceeded in 3 out of 5 departments. The impact of these two episodes on public health was assessed as follows:
48 SOS Médecins calls were recorded regionally for the iCanicule indicator, along with 103 emergency room visits for the iCanicule indicator, 69 of which resulted in hospitalization. Emergency care visits accounted for up to 1.8% of daily SOS Médecins calls and 0.7% of daily emergency room visits.
Across the two heatwave periods that particularly impacted our region, 11% of observed deaths were attributed to the heat, three-quarters of which involved people aged 75 and older.
