Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 8, 2015.
Mushroom Poisoning: The InVS recorded 721 cases of mushroom poisoning between June 29 and October 4, 2015. A peak was observed in week 36 following five consecutive weeks of rising mushroom poisoning cases. After a decline in the number of cases in week 37 (79 cases), a new increase in the number of mushroom poisoning cases was recorded by the CAPTV network for weeks 38 and 39 (100 and 120 cases, respectively). This increase is likely linked to heavy rainfall during those two weeks, which promoted mushroom growth and consequently their harvesting. Starting in week 40, a further decrease in the number of poisoning cases was observed (108 cases). In terms of geographic distribution, these cases were observed mainly in Aquitaine (11.7%), Midi-Pyrénées (11.4%), Pays-de-la-Loire (8.7%), and Île-de-France (8.6%). The OSCOUR® network recorded 358 emergency room visits for mushroom poisoning during the same period, with temporal variations similar to those observed for poisonings recorded by the CAPTVs.In Midi-Pyrénées, 82 cases have been recorded since the start of surveillance by the Poison Control and Toxicovigilance Centers, and 61 emergency department visits in Midi-Pyrénées for mushroom poisoning were recorded via the OSCOUR network. The health consequences of this type of poisoning can be serious (severe digestive disorders, liver damage that may require a transplant), or even fatal. They can lead to hospitalization, potentially requiring intensive care.In most cases, these poisonings result from mistaking poisonous mushrooms for edible ones, which is why it is important to remain vigilant, whether you are an expert or just an occasional forager. If you experience one or more symptoms—including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, tremors, dizziness, vision problems, etc.—after eating wild mushrooms: immediately call "15" or the Toulouse Poison Control Center (05 61 77 74 47) and mention that you have consumed mushrooms.
