Workshops on the implementation of an Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in French Guiana. Cayenne, February 9–11, 2004. Recommendations for defining strategies and developing the EPI action plan in French Guiana

Workshops were held from February 9 to 11, 2004, in Cayenne to support the implementation of an Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in French Guiana. Local, national, and even international public health authorities—represented by the PAHO regional advisor for the EPI in the English-speaking Caribbean and Suriname—as well as stakeholders on the ground, having fully recognized the problem, confirmed the urgency of such an initiative. Three days of intense collaboration among all parties made it possible to define strategies and an action plan for the future Guianan immunization program. The main roles and framework for the participation of the various institutions involved were proposed. In particular, it was suggested that the EIP be led by a program director, specially recruited and attached to the DSDS of French Guiana. He will be assisted by two coordinators from the institutions managing public vaccination services: the General Council of French Guiana for the coastal area and the Cayenne Hospital Center for the inland area. The new public health law should eventually make it possible to formally designate vaccine-preventable diseases as a regional priority and facilitate the mobilization of resources from future partners of the Regional Public Health Group (GRSP) to carry out the activities outlined in the EPI. Furthermore, the establishment of an EPI can serve as a model for planning health initiatives within the framework of future GRSPs. Coordination of activities with neighboring countries will take place on the ground, particularly with teams from Suriname and Brazil, during regular meetings with border countries and annual meetings of the region’s EPI directors, organized by PAHO, where the director of French Guiana’s EPI will present his action plan. Finally, among other forms of support, PAHO will participate in training activities and the supervision of French Guiana’s EPI program while remaining ready to provide any technical assistance that may also be requested.
