Key Points

The first half of 2023 was marked by an increase in malaria cases diagnosed within the healthcare system beginning in April and by the identification of two foci of local transmission in urban/suburban areas in Régina and Matoury.

Although the number of malaria cases recorded during the third quarter of 2023 remained stable compared to the second quarter, the increase observed compared to 2022 was confirmed (the number of cases quadrupled in the third quarter compared to the same period last year).

Between July and September 2023, the new malaria cases identified are believed to have been contracted in previously known transmission areas. The indigenous P. falciparum transmission cluster in Matoury no longer appears to be active.

• 88 malaria cases diagnosed in the region, 12 patients hospitalized, 0 deaths

• 64 P. vivax (Pv) episodes, 21 P. falciparum (Pf) episodes, 1 mixed Pv/Pf episode, 1 P. malariae episode, and 1 P. ovale episode (imported)

• 23 imported cases and 30 indigenous cases, including 6 P. falciparum episodes located in the Littoral region

• 80% of cases (excluding relapses) have a reported presumed site of infection
