Influenza Outbreak Situation in French Guiana. Update as of June 17, 2022.

Key Points

  • Outpatient visits for acute respiratory infections have remained generally stable over the past 5 weeks

  • Low number of flu-like illness visits, with cases concentrated mainly in the Maroni area over the past two weeks

  • Increased activity in emergency departments for flu-like illness over the past 5 weeks, likely linked to the resurgence of COVID-19

  • No positive results among the 17 samples tested for influenza in community practice over the past 3 weeks

  • No influenza virus identified by virological surveillance in the past two weeks

  • No new severe cases admitted to intensive care

French Guiana has been in the post-epidemic phase of the flu since late March (week 2022-12).

Over the past three weeks, the situation has remained generally calm: the increase in activity in emergency departments is likely linked to the current resurgence of COVID-19.

If this trend continues, and provided that no other influenza virus begins to circulate in the region, the end of the seasonal influenza epidemic will be announced in the next epidemiological update
