COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of September 24, 2020
Key Points
Since early March, 9,790 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in French Guiana. Last week, an average of 22 cases were confirmed each day, and the weekly incidence stands at 54 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the weekly testing rate remains at over 1,000 tests per 100,000 inhabitants. As of September 22, the effective reproduction number (R_eff) is estimated at 0.81 [0.69–0.95]. New hospitalizations continued to decline, while ICU admissions and deaths remained stable, with 4 admissions and 2 deaths last week. French Guiana has recorded 65 hospital deaths to date. The two deaths were already included in the epidemiological update for Week 37 (September 7–13).
The rate of acute respiratory infections seen in primary care has increased but is likely due to the resurgence of seasonal viruses, particularly rhinoviruses. Visits to emergency departments for suspected COVID-19 remain very low. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 are declining throughout the territory. The data are encouraging, but the regional incidence remains relatively high, and efforts must continue to ensure the curve follows its current trajectory and to prevent an early resurgence of the epidemic. As public health measures are eased, the goal is to maintain high levels of preventive measures in all settings (workplaces, schools, public spaces, etc.). Wearing a mask, physical distancing (maintaining a distance of at least one meter, avoiding handshakes and hugs), and hand hygiene must therefore be practiced consistently in daily life. The most vulnerable are protected only by the responsible actions of those around them. Getting tested, even without symptoms, is an opportunity to protect yourself and your loved ones.
