Health Surveillance in Auvergne. Epidemiological Update as of July 30, 2015.
2015 Drowning Survey: The French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) and the Directorate General for Civil Security and Crisis Management (DGSCGC) of the Ministry of the Interior conducted an initial survey in 2001 in several participating departments. Since 2002, the epidemiological data collection on summer drownings has been expanded to all departments in mainland France and overseas territories. Since 2003, this survey has been conducted every three years, always in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior, and in 2012, in partnership with the Ministry of Ecology, the survey was renewed. The survey takes place from June 1 to September 30, 2015. It covers all drownings resulting in hospitalization or death. Its objective is to collect and analyze data on drownings that occurred in France during the summer months of 2015, in order to guide prevention and regulatory actions.Such comprehensive national surveys are rare, as they require the participation of numerous stakeholders in the field. Between June 1 and July 26, 2015, 661 drowning incidents resulting in either death (n = 253 deaths) or hospitalization were recorded in metropolitan France and the overseas departments and territories (DOM-TOM):- 584 accidental drownings, including 199 deaths (34%)- 60 intentional drownings (suicide, attempted suicide, assault), including 40 deaths- 17 drownings of unknown origin, including 14 deaths.Of the 584 accidental drownings recorded, 263 (45%) occurred at sea, 155 (27%) in swimming pools of all types, 81 (14%) in bodies of water, 64 (11%) in rivers, and 21 (4%) in other locations (bathtubs, ponds, etc....). Of the 155 pool drownings, 87 (56%) occurred in private family pools, and 48 (31%) involved children under the age of 6.A national drowning prevention program coordinated by the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes) was launched in the summer of 2006 to raise public awareness of the risks associated with swimming, not only in private pools but also in the sea, lakes, and rivers.
