23rd World Alzheimer's Day
To mark the 23rd World Alzheimer's Day, Santé publique France is publishing a weekly epidemiological bulletin on the topic of "Alzheimer's disease and related dementias" and a special report on neurodegenerative diseases.
Neurodegenerative diseases are a major cause of disability and have a significant impact on the quality of life of those affected, as well as on that of their loved ones and caregivers.
Today, in France, more than one million people are affected by a neurodegenerative disease: approximately 1,200,000 people are estimated to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia—by far the most common cause—and 160,000 by Parkinson’s disease. Due to the progressive aging of the population and the lack of curative treatments, the number of people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases is expected to grow steadily in the coming years, and the burden of these diseases will inevitably increase.
