Surveillance of HIV Testing and Diagnosis and AIDS, France, 2008
This article presents comprehensive data on HIV and AIDS in France, updated for 2008, derived from three surveillance systems coordinated by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance: surveillance of HIV testing activity (LaboVIH), mandatory reporting (DO) of AIDS, and mandatory reporting of HIV. In 2008, nearly five million HIV serology tests were performed, of which approximately 10,600 were confirmed positive, a figure stable compared to 2007. Given an estimated coverage of 71% in 2008, the number of people who learned of their HIV-positive status in 2008 is estimated at approximately 6,500 [95% CI: 6,200–6,800], a figure that also remained stable compared to 2007. Regarding AIDS surveillance, for which coverage was re-estimated at 66%, the number of cases in 2008 was estimated at approximately 1,550, a figure that has also stabilized compared to the previous year following a period of decline. In conclusion, 2008 was marked by a stabilization in HIV testing activity, the number of new HIV diagnoses, and the number of AIDS cases—a stabilization that may be cause for concern since it follows a period during which these HIV surveillance indicators were in a phase of decline.
