HIV Testing in France, 2003–2013.

This article presents an overview, updated for 2013, of HIV testing activity in France in medical testing laboratories, based on data from the "LaboVIH" registry and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) conducted as part of community-based screening initiatives. In 2013, 5.2 million (95% CI: [5.14–5.28]) HIV serology tests were performed, representing 80 per 1,000 inhabitants, a figure that has remained stable since 2011. Of these, 11,278 [10,739–11,817] were confirmed positive, representing 172 per million inhabitants. This figure increased by 7% compared to 2011 at the national level, an increase observed in the French overseas departments and in mainland France excluding Île-de-France, but not in Île-de-France. Approximately 344,000 serological tests were conducted anonymously and free of charge in 2013, with a higher proportion of positive serological tests per 1,000 tests (3.6) than among non-anonymous serological tests (2.1). Approximately 56,500 rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) were performed by community organizations or prevention centers, of which 8.6 per 1,000 were positive. HIV testing activity in France increased following the publication of recommendations to expand testing, then has stabilized since 2011. The increase in the number of confirmed positive serology tests since 2011 may reflect more targeted testing among particularly at-risk populations. (R.A.)
