Assuming a reduction in the risk of viral transmission, the first official recommendations on antiretroviral prophylaxis following occupational HIV exposure among healthcare workers were published in September 1995. They were revised and extended to cover non-occupational exposures in April 1998. The clinical management of individuals exposed to HIV (both occupational and non-occupational exposures) has been the subject of a national evaluation since July 1999, coordinated by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS). The purpose of this evaluation is to describe the sociodemographic characteristics of individuals seeking care following HIV exposure, to analyze the type of prophylaxis prescribed, to assess its toxicity, and to evaluate its effectiveness through serological follow-up of exposed individuals.
