Women continue to shoulder the bulk of infant care because they have no choice [Interview].
While fathers’ involvement in parenting has undoubtedly increased, women continue to shoulder the bulk of infant care during the first few months after birth. Although fathers may put the baby to bed, feed the baby a bottle, or occasionally give the baby a bath, the bulk of the care falls to mothers, even when they are breastfeeding or have returned to work. It should be noted, however, that fathers are not necessarily supported in this role. There is therefore an individual and societal responsibility: guidance and training should be provided to both mothers and fathers. The message conveyed to parents should make clear that neither parent is inherently more competent than the other.
