Teenage girls in distress: toward care that better reflects their needs.

As an anthropologist, the author conducted a quantitative survey of about 100 young women aged 14 to 18 regarding their risky behaviors, their self-esteem, and their perception of their femininity. Most put themselves in danger because they view themselves with contempt, particularly in an effort to conform to the dominant models promoted by society: the conquering man on one side, and the pure or impure woman on the other. The author proposes preventing this sense of low self-esteem through early, gender-specific educational intervention.
