Recognize them so they can exist.

How should we support young people struggling with social integration? Xavier Pommereau, a hospital psychiatrist, has been seeing them on a daily basis for many years at the adolescent unit of Bordeaux University Hospital. He emphasizes that we must not focus solely on access to care—which is fundamental—because professionals—and psychiatrists in particular—have a major role to play in “combating the gnawing sense of a lack of identity” that plagues these young people. In Bordeaux, he has established support groups of eight to twelve young people, led by professionals. The results achieved—establishing dialogue and helping to alleviate certain fears—highlight what can be done.
