Corneal Harvesting and Transplantation in France from 1992 to 1997
In 1994, no precise data regarding transplant and donor procurement activities, or the number of patients awaiting corneal transplants, was available in France. In this context, an assessment of current practices was necessary to estimate the volume of procurement and transplantation activities and to evaluate the need for grafts, as a decline in procurement and transplantation activities had been reported in 1992. Since 1995, several national surveys have been conducted. A questionnaire regarding the volume of procurement and transplantation activities is sent annually to the heads of ophthalmology departments and the directors of public or private healthcare facilities. This questionnaire also covers the method of procurement, storage locations, and the number of patients on the waiting list in each department as of December 31 of each year. (adapted from the text)
