Cities: Integrating health into urban planning, with resident participation.

The city is a space that can either promote or undermine health, depending on its design and organization. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate the strong correlation between the living environment, urban planning, and health. Health-promoting modes of transportation, green spaces, a welcoming atmosphere, social connections, and community participation all have a positive impact on residents’ health. Drawing on two concrete examples, Swiss urban planner Marcos Weil explains how a participatory approach—involving residents early in the decision-making process—can help improve quality of life and, consequently, the health of its residents.
