Attitudes and preventive practices among general practitioners in France.
In June 2011, INPES published a new survey from the Physicians’ Health Barometer. More than 2,000 general practitioners were surveyed. The vast majority believe that prevention is part of their role, and they readily discuss topics such as cardiovascular risk and smoking with their patients. However, they find it more difficult to discuss alcohol, drugs, emotional and sexual life—topics that touch on personal matters and where they fear being intrusive. This survey highlights what general practitioners need to better fulfill their mission of prevention and education: time, public awareness campaigns, greater recognition of their role, informational materials for patients, and the ability to delegate tasks, particularly to paramedical professionals.
