Breast cancer mortality in departments that have implemented an organized breast cancer screening program since 1990.

The objective of this study is to describe trends (1978–1999) in breast cancer mortality among the general population in the ten departments with long-standing organized screening programs and in the other metropolitan French departments. A significant reduction in breast cancer mortality was observed in the group of departments with long-standing screening programs, whereas mortality rates remained stable in the other departments. These results should be interpreted with caution; however, they are encouraging for the future of the program.
