COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of December 15, 2021

  • In week 49, a slight increase in the number of confirmed cases was observed (+14%), with a regional incidence rate of 103 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • This increase is concentrated in the Cayenne Island sector, where the incidence rate reached 159 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (+22%), while indicators are declining in the Savanes sector (134 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the West sector (22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • The effective R value stood at 1.13. The testing rate was on the rise, and the regional positivity rate remained stable and still below the 5% alert threshold.

  • The new Omicron variant has not yet been detected in French Guiana; the Delta variant remains the dominant strain in the territory.

  • Hospitalizations across all departments were down slightly, with 17 hospitalizations in S49.

  • Three ICU admissions and three deaths were reported, unchanged from the previous week.
