Sexual violence: Medical examinations of victims who filed complaints in 2009 in Seine-Saint-Denis (France).

Introduction - It is estimated that at least 50,000 rapes are committed each year in France, only a small fraction of which result in formal complaints. The objective here was to assess the characteristics of the victims, the perpetrators, and this type of violent situation based on examination reports of individuals who sought care at the forensic medical unit in Bondy (Seine-Saint-Denis) in 2009. Methods - Prospective data collection on all examinations performed in 2009 and, for adults and adolescents, their follow-up one month later. Results - A total of 572 individuals (children and adults) were examined (510 women [89%] and 62 men [11%]). The perpetrator was unknown in 29% of cases. The assault involved vaginal penetration (55%), oral penetration (22%), or anal penetration (15%), or touching (17%). Victims reported no physical violence other than sexual violence in 60% of cases. The examination revealed traumatic injuries in 21% of cases. Among 239 adults and adolescents aged 15 and older, 27% reported having experienced physical or sexual violence in the past 12 months. The partner responsible for the violence that prompted the complaint had committed prior acts of violence in three-quarters of cases. More than 80% of the 104 victims examined one month later exhibited post-traumatic stress disorder; one-third reported a significant change in their substance use patterns. Conclusion - These data describe situations of sexual violence that led to the filing of a complaint, among which, in this population, intimate partner violence is becoming increasingly common.
