International Scientific Symposium | Reducing the Burden of Alcohol: Focus on Two Scientific and Public Policy Challenges, December 3, 2024

Santé publique France, the French public health agency responsible for the prevention of addictive behaviors, and EuroHealthNet, a European network of public organizations working in the field of health promotion and prevention, are organizing a scientific conference on December 3, 2024, on the topic of reducing alcohol-related harm.

Alcohol consumption has a significant impact on both morbidity and mortality in Europe and represents a considerable economic and social burden on society. Effective strategies recommended by experts and international health authorities to reduce the burden of alcohol consumption are now well established. However, their implementation in France and many other European countries remains challenging.

During this scientific symposium, international researchers, NGOs, and scientific experts will share their knowledge and experience on two key scientific challenges in the prevention of alcohol consumption:

  • How to take into account the latest scientific evidence in order to develop and promote low-risk drinking guidelines and how to implement them effectively?

  • The commercial determinants of health: what impact do they have on prevention policies, and what levers of action are available for public health?

The symposium is intended for all public health stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers interested in preventing alcohol-related harm and reducing the burden of alcohol consumption. Individuals affiliated with the alcohol industry and those with a conflict of interest related to the purpose of this symposium are not invited to participate.

  • The symposium will take place on December 3, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at TownHall Europe in Brussels and will also be available via Zoom.

  • Presentations and discussions will be in English, but translation into French will be available.

  • For any specific accessibility requirements (e.g., sign language interpretation, live captioning), please contact the organizers by November 8.

  • Due to limited on-site capacity, only online registration is currently available.
