This methodological note describes how AIDS surveillance operates in France. This surveillance system, established in 1982, has been based on mandatory reporting since 1986. Reporting is based on the WHO/CDC definition of AIDS, established in September 1982 and amended in June 1985 and August 1987, and subsequently on the 1993 European definition. (adapted from the text)
