In Canada, approximately 100 older adults in the Quebec City metropolitan area were surveyed seven years apart regarding their mobility in their suburban neighborhoods—residential environments designed by and for cars, characterized by their distance from shops and services. The research shows that despite the difficulties they face, residents prefer to stay in “their home” and “their neighborhood.” These suburban residents develop coping strategies to deal with the challenges of mobility in this type of setting, particularly as they age.
